below.
LPG
~ FAQ
What
is LPG and where does it come from?
60% of LPG comes from oil field production, the other 40% comes
from the refining of crude oil. It is a mixture of propane, butane,
ethane, methane, and other gases. At atmospheric pressure it is
a vapour, under pressure it becomes a liquid. It's odourless, but
has a odour added so that you can smell leaks.
What
are the costs?
LPG retails at about half the price of unleaded petrol and diesel.
This means that LPG vehicles have about 40% less running costs.
You could recoup the initial cost for conversion within a year.
Does
Macgas Aberfeldy convert vehicles?
We do not carry out conversions, we recommend Mototune in Dundee
who are LPGA Approved and a SMTA Member, their address and contact
details are on the contact page.
How
Safe is LPG?
LPG tanks are far stronger than conventional fuel tanks and are
rigorously tested to the highest UK standards. We also recommend
using a LPGA (Liquefied Petroleum Gas Association) approved converter
to insure safe installation.
How
Available is LPG?
With more than 50,000 vehicles in the UK using LPG, the Fuel is
now widely available throughout the country, although some areas
have been slower than others to stock it.
If
I convert my vehicle to LPG, can I still drive on petrol?
Yes, and with duel fuels you can almost double the distance traveled
before refilling. The petrol tank still remains and you can switch
from LPG to petrol, and vice-versa.
Is
there any other benefits?
LPG is more efficient than other liquid fuels and emits 15% less
CO2 than equivalent petrol powered vehicles.
LPG also emits 90% less particulate matter than diesel powered vehicles,
making it a much more environmentally friendly fuel.
Is
there any Government grants available?
Yes. If your car is less
than 12 months old and has covered under 25k miles, up to 75% of
the cost of your conversion can be covered by a grant. Cars eligible
are listed on the Powershift Register, which can be found on the
LPGA website (see links page).
